What is the Winter Solstice?
The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. It's a special time when the South Pole of the Earth is tilted farthest away from the Sun.
In June, during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice, the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky. This makes it the shortest day and longest night of the year for us.
The term “solstice” comes from Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” This reflects the belief that the Sun pauses in the sky before it changes direction.
