Known as the "world market", Dandenong Market is a 153-year old traditional working market in Melbourne's South East. Dandenong Market offers everything from honeycomb fresh from the beehive, flowers cut straight from the farm, and apples picked from the orchard. At Dandenong Market you can shop and experience the world as a local and get insider tips from expert traders, score amazing bargains and source seasonal produce.
Dandenong Market is one of Victoria's oldest markets and, in my opinion, one of the best. It might not be the most beautiful at times, but it’s about value for money. I've been buying from the Dandenong Market for the last 20 years. You might have to look around and compare prices, but you can always get a good bargain.
Parking is still cheap at the front, and if you drive around long enough, you're bound to find a good one. It pays to check out prices and have a plan. I can’t really recommend the best fruiterer, but if you are looking for fresh, just-picked flawless fruit or veggies, you will pay more. It will take a few trips, but you will find the one for you.
Now, that's not all. You have two food courts, and once this COVID is over, you will be able to take advantage of the large food court with Indian food, Turkish food, Lebanese, Chinese, Korean, sugar cane juice, and even the cheapest pizza slices I've ever seen. Don't forget to get a burger from the ladies in the Middle Burger Ladies.
The second food court has my favorite shish kebabs (Shish Delish). Get the one with tabouli and the Adana kebab—mmmm. There are also Vietnamese rolls across the road. There are also more food shops on the Cleeland St entrance, offering everything from New Zealand cuisine to handmade bureks, made in an old-school pizza oven.
Also, don't forget to grab a coffee and some lunch at Cafe Valentina for some South American treats.
When it's dessert time, you have the iconic Dandee Doughnuts (I've been eating those since I was 10), and there are poffertjes too.
The Dandy Market also holds the best seafood (Schwarze Seafood) and poultry suppliers (Dandy Fresh Poultry), best because they are cheap and friendly and always there to help you out.
The Dandenong Market also has a huge section for craft, clothing, electrical, tools, Australiana, party supplies, soaps and incense, and lots more. There's even a great little coffee shop at the end.
Now I could go on, but you have to come and enjoy all the food this market has to offer. If you have never come, please do yourself a favor and come along to enjoy the culture, the sights, and the laughs this truly wonderful market has to offer.
